Changing the cursor to a custom graphic

I have been searching for a way to use a custom graphic as the pointer/graphic on a website that I created. If there is anyone who knows if it is possble and by what method your input will be greatly appreciated.

If the script is java, xml, or any other please specify if it compatable with older browsers and from which versions to present if possible.

I believe you can pull this off with Comet Cursor, but they are known to package spyware with their software. Also, Comet Cursor only works on Windows with Internet Explorer.

With CSS, you can change the cursor to a number of predefined images, like the resize icon, but you can't use a custom image. <edit>Except in IE - see Skunk's comment</edit>

You can accomplish this using Flash. Don't know if that's an option for you but it's possible.

If you're only concerned about IE, there is a way of assigning a custom curosr file using CSS that doesn't require any plugins or anything unpleasant like that. Comet Cursor was written by Satan himself (it's spyware).
