    why wont this php thing work?

    right, i use php include for my header and footer and i wanted the title to be different on every page so i did some php.

    i put the title like this

    <title>
    <?php
    echo("Company Reviews :: $title");
    ?>
    </title>

    on the header.php

    and on every page i have put

    <?php
    $title = "Auctions - Ebay, Gothic Auctions and Deal Spin";
    ?>

    This should then set the title as Company Reviews :: Auctions - Ebay, Gothic Auctions and Deal Spin right?. Well it doesn't why not?

    I know it's a simple question but, do you make the $title assignment BEFORE the <?php echo"$title"; ?> ?

    is there any way to do it then because i cannot put the $title assignment before the <?php echo"$title"; ?> because the <?php echo"$title"; ?> is in the title of the webpage and the $title assignment is in the body. helpp, lol.

    LOL!

    In order for a varible to be manipulated/displayed it MUST be assigned a value BEFORE that manipulation takes place.

    If you place the assignment of the value ($title = "blah blah blah" BEFORE the display (echo $title you WILL get "blah blah blah". But if you attempt to display the value of $title BEFORE assigning it a value, you will get absolutely nothing.

    I do not know of ANY programming language that is that intuitive.

    Yes, there most certainly is a way.

    Before you even get to the <html> tag do this:
    PHP Code:
    <?
      $title
    "foobar";
    ?>
    <html>
      <head>
        <title><? echo $title?></title>
      </head>
      <body>
      ...the rest of your code here...
    John

    PS. if this won't work for you, maybe you should post some of your code here so it can be evaluated.

    Why would you want to make the $title assignment in the body of an HTML page anyway???

    Brinkster is one of the best freehosts that I have seen around in all my time on the web. I have used them a number of times before I got my domains and I have been truly satisfied. With the free account you will receive 30MB of webspace and 500MB of bandwidth. The bandwidth limit may sound like not much but it is enough for small personal sites. There is one problem though that you do not get FTP but you still get a web based uploader/file manager. Also, you need to take note that there is no advertisements on Brinksters members pages. If you would like to use them as a pay host there is also plans for $3.95 a month ($3.95 setup fee) and two plans for $12.95 a month ($12.95 setup fee). I am not sure what they are like though for a paying host, if they are as good as what they are as a free host then they are excellent.

    Ok.

    Why can't you do this?
    PHP Code:
    <?php
      $title
    "foobar";
      include(
    "header.php");
    ?>
    Would that solve it?

    Wait...

    If you put that code in the header.php file you would have a redundant call to you header.php file and that would be nasty.

    It was my understanding that that you wanted each page to have a different title... hold on... let me see what I can put together that might clear it up.

    In this example you are assigning the value of $title BEFORE you include the header.php file.

    PHP Code:
    <?php
      $title
    "The title of THIS particular page";
      include(
    "header.php");
    ?>

    <a href="http://www.brinkster.com" target="_BLANK"><b>Brinkster</b></a><Br>
