Professional photographer needs excellent LCD

Im shopping for an lcd screen for a new setup being built for a photographer. I Need to know 1) how important is brightness 2) what would be a good rating of the brightness. If brightness is not a huge factor what would be the thing to watch for.

Additionally, should I look for an LCD or an LED?

While I have no idea what a photographer would want/need in a screen, I can say that my LED screen (Samsung XL2370) is easily the best/brightest/clearest/sharpest/fastest monitor I have ever had.

Take a look at what Samsung and LG have to offer. Those two brands are typically of high quality. Beyond that, it's up to your eyes.

If you want to go with high-end quality, then I recommend an LCD built with an IPS panel rather than buying the cheaper TN panels. Good ones are from EIZO (ColorEdge range), NEC (especially the Spectra range), or LaCie.

Well the problem is we are buying online. Additionally I don't know of anywhere that have LCD monitors displayed for viewing unless we go the route of a product marketed as a tv.

I'm more looking for numbers here rather than brands. What specs would be more important and what they should be at / above.

Best Buy usually has a decent selection on display. Same goes for Circuit City or any decent electronics store in your area.

It's all about gamut and colour accuracy for photography, so go with an IPS panel, and spend some time callibrating it as few monitors are setup for maximum neutrality out of the box
