Code advice for a neat math q.
Gentlemen; I started learning javascript a week ago or so and wanted to tackle this math question that I remembered from many many moons back:
There is a math contest held in a city and 1 to 10 people are joining from 67 cities. So a min of 67 and a max of 670 people. Each contestant was given a number in order of their entrance into the contest hall. After the results are announced, they ask the champion what his entrance number to the hall was, and he replies: "The sum of the people entering before me and the sum of the people entering after me are equal. See if you can find my number?"
Really neat question, for me anyways.
It took me a while to write this code and it worked. But I'm sure it could be written in a much nicer/tidier fashion.

p.s. I chose to start from 40 and end at 500 after a quick calculation (rounded the numbers) cause less than 40 and more than 500 would not be possible. Or so me thinks.

By "the sum of the people" I assume you mean the sum of the number of people.
In that case for the champion to have had the same number entering before him/her as the number entering afterwards then the total number of people entering must be an odd number.
Therefore isn't the champion's entrance number simply

Or have I misunderstood something?

sorry I wasn't very clear maybe but the sum in this case is: 1+2+3+4+5. For ex. if he was the 100th person to go into the hall then that would mean 1+2+3+4+5+......99 has to equal 101+102+103+104+....n.

I did it this way and both your code and mine give the same answer.
The champion's number is 204 and the before and after sums = 20706
Your code is less lines though.

Hi Kalon; I seem to be getting an error: "Stop running Javascript?" message when I copy/pasted all your code. I wonder if I'm doing sth wrong? Does it run fine for you?

The next year, each of the 67 cities sent between 10 to 100 athletes,
and the same champion gave the same answer.
This time, he was number 1189 of 1681 contestants.
But the next year, when the number of entries increased tenfold again,
they could not tell if he was number 6930 of 9800 or 40391 of 57121,
so they gave the prize to the first runner up,
and the old champion swore off addition forever.
Yet another method, this one quits calculating as soon as the followers total less than the preceders:

I only get that pop up prompt in IE and not in any of the other browsers (FF, Opera, Chrome and Safari)
I think IE senses you're doing a lot of "number crunching" and so asks if you want to continue or not. I just keep clicking 'No" (to the question to stop running the script) 34 times and eventually the 204 answer pops up.

Kalon and mrhoo; thank you so much for the effort. I can run both codes with success. By changing the min max values or totPpl value can arrive at 6, 35, 204 and 1189 which are all similar type of numbers.
mrhoo, I cannot get at the higher numbers you mentioned as I get a javascript terminate alert.
However I am not at a level to follow the logic in the code through.
Is there a way to see what the code is doing step by step; that might help me understand what the code is doing on each line on every loop etc.
I am presently using the free HTML Kit on Windows platform and can't seem to find such a feature in it.
Any suggestions?

I just realized the relationship between those numbers:
1, 6, 35, 204, 1189, 6930, 40391
(x 6  the previous number) as in
(6 x 6 1) = 35
(35 x 6  6) = 204
(204 x 6  35) = 1189
(1189 x 6  204) = 6930
(6930 x 6  1189) = 40391
so the next number should be:
(40391 x 6  6930) = 235416
WOW! This would also make an interesting number pattern question.

You can do something similar to get the total number of entrants
that satisfies the problem
next total= current total*6  previous total+2;
The first ten results match with bruteforce
testing each number, but I haven't got a proof to rely on the pattern holding up forever.

Beyond 10 you need to use a repeating method that does a bite at a time,
and you need BigIntegers
the sums get beyond javascript's integer precision at 2^51,which is the sum of something
less than the first ninety million digits..

Another interesting pattern is that the sum of the last
champion's number and the total entrants added to the current champion's
number equals the current total entrants.

Here's how I worked it out:
The sum from 1 to 10 can be calculated by adding successive terms from the end of the list
1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 + 9 + 10
=
(1 + 10) + (2 + 9) + (3 + 8) + (4 + 7) + (5 + 6)
The formula for this is:
(1 + 10) * 5
Or more generalised:
(start + end) * (end  start + 1) / 2
Now for the question.
"The sum of the people entering before me and the sum of the people entering after me are equal. See if you can find my number?"
Where 67 >= total <= 670
c = champion's position
t = total people
The sum of people before
(start + end) * (end  start + 1) / 2
or
(1 + c  1) * (c  1  1 + 1) / 2
or
c * (c  1) / 2
The sum of people after
(start + end) * (end  start + 1) / 2
or
(c + 1 + t) * (t  (c + 1) + 1) / 2
or
(c + 1 + t) * (t  c) / 2
So now we have two unknowns, and two equations
c(c  1) / 2 = (c + 1 + t) * (t  c) / 2
or
t(t + c + 1)/2  c(c + 1 + t)/2  c(c  1) / 2 = 0
or
t(t + c + 1)  c(c + 1 /2
or
t(t + 1)  c(2c) = 0
or
t^2 + t  2c^2 = 0
So, we're looking for when
t^2 + t = 2c^2
c^2 = (t^2 + t) / 2
t^2 = 2c^2  t
So, we can check for when
sqrt(t^2 + t) / 2) is a whole number

It appears that the sequence is one of triangular numbers that are also square.
A square with sides that are 1189, has the same area as a triangle with sides of 1681.
