This is probably a newbie question: what are these browsers?

I just checked the stats of a site and when I check for the top three browsers, I got the following:

    1 3788 81.55% 2687 82.05% 643 68.62% 226 59.47% 12931 Mozilla/4.*
    2 186 4.00% 164 5.01% 71 7.58% 39 10.26% 759 Mozilla/5.*
    3 146 3.14% 118 3.60% 46 4.91% 15 3.95% 490 Mozilla/3.*

Which mozilla versions are used by IE 5,5.5 and 6? And which ones are used by Netscape 4 and 6?

Better yet, does anyone have a link to information on understanding these kinds of stats?

First off, you need to look a lot deeper than just the "mozilla" number.

But to answer the question you asked:

Mozilla/3.* = IE3 (Mac), Netscape 3, Opera 3, and probably a whole bunch of search engine spiders.

    Mozilla/5.* = Netscape 6, Mozilla, and (I think) most of mozilla's siblings

Mozilla/4.* = Netscape 4, IE 4, 5 and 6, Opera 4, 5, and 6, and probably a whole heap of others. This is WHY you need to go deeper than the "mozilla/x.x" string.

The guff that follows that initial string is the key to figuring out what browser it REALLY is.

mozilla.org's "ultimate javascript client sniffer" at http://www.mozilla.org/docs/web-deve...wser_type.html will give you a few clues, but that's not exactly easy to decipher.

This column http://www.macedition.com/cb/cb_20020114.php has some info, albeit mac-centric, that will at least give you an idea of what you're up against.
