    RackShack.net

Can anyone here tell me the pros and cons of going with RackShack for a dedicated server with Ensim?

    Thanks,
    Josh

I do beleive that Rackshack severs are unmanaged, so unless you are familair with running a server(s), its something to consider. I know friends who have servers with them. Some are very pleased, others have taken there business elsewhere.

    Pros
CHEAP. Pretty decent network. Complete autonomy over your server. Excellent user support forum.

    Cons
Support is very limited. They will either reboot it or reformat/restore it for you. That is officially all they will do. Sometimes you can talk them into doing specific commands at the console if you lock yourself out.....been there, done that. But as far as fixing problems...you are on your own.

We have a server with them, running Ensim. Pros -- if you know what you're doing, you should be fine. Cons... RS are bunch of ******s and if something breaks (as it did with ours) it's down to you to sort it.

And Ensim isn't too hot either... it is fine and does everything you would need from a CP but something like HSphere is much better at it...

Ensim is annoying, but I've grown to live with it.

As for support, my server wasn't connecting to the network after a reboot and the tech stayed up through the night working on. I went to bed about midnight, but about 6 AM I got an email saying they had found the problem, a bad network cable, and its now fixed.

If you want to you can look at it like this:

    Rackshack Server: $100

Other Server: $400 (maybe even more)

Now if you paid someone to help maintain your server, do you think you'd end up paying them over $300 a month? This isn't a full time employee, this is just someone who you can bug part time if you need a little help.

Remember that Rackshack isn't cheap just because they are unmanaged, but also because they're owned by a large ISP who has tons of bandwidth and thus can give it to you for less. Try finding 400GB of monthly bandwidth elsewhere and see how much you'll pay.

I recommend Nocster . Not only are their prices are competitive to that of Rackshack's, but there servers are managed.

If reports about any of these $99 server places are to be believed, the old adage of, "you get what you pay for" still holds true. I recommend you check WebHostingTalk.com before you go with any providers.

Rackshack do have servers available that runs RedHat instead of Ensim

Although I think right now it's only available to Celeron servers, they ran out of PIII and AMD servers, dunno when they'll get some more.

    First of all,
I would watch out with web hosting companies thiese days. Many of them are running into financial problems.

I am pretty sure for dedicated servers the top ones are:
    Interland
    rackspace
    verio

I know that Interland has recently merged with hostpro, acquired Interliant, ATT small business web hosting, and dialtone Internet.

dialtone is offering pretty nice IBM x-servers for $150 a month. I believe these are managed though.

Dialtone is a good company, if you want the cheap un-managed route and still a profitable company that will stay in business I would go with Rackshack. We've had a server with them for a few months, and it's been OK so far. No down-time really, but going with Rackshack honestly would be really annoying if you don't have some technical background as they offer little support since it's an unmanaged server.
