They are using "Dmoz Open Directory Data" in their sites. If you want, you can have it too.

These sites are a dime a dozen. Do they really make any money anymore?

Probably about as much money as dmoz makes, if you get what I mean.

There are so many of these sites on eBay last time I looked, most hiding the fact the content comes from Dmoz, in fact I saw one listed here in the site exchange other day.

First of all, it's OK to take the DMOZ DB and create a web site based on that content - that's the idea of the whole thing.

But: Some of these guys should read the DMOZ agreement a little better. The link to the DMOZ submission form is pretty much hidden at the end of the page & IMHO not in the way the agreement wants it to be.

Believe it or not, this can generate traffic.

I made a little stupid portal for my home town. http://www.westbranch.net

Its really dinky, and so is the town at 2000-5000 population.

Anyways I put a DMOZ script on there and altered it to be SE friendly. Not only do search engines spider the hell out of it, but people actually visit the site because of it. If they search for some obscure topic my site often comes up in the search results.

It gets about 200 uniques a day because of that.

Maybe I should consider adding one to mine. But then my entire site is actually a directory.
