Any way to check if RAM is bad?

Is there an easy way to check the integrity of the RAM on a computer without opening it (ie: a good software)? Trying to get down to the bottom of a "black screen of death message" in XP I'm getting when scanning for viruses using Norton Anti Virus:

I would stick with Memtest86 ....download, make bootdisc....boot with it, and there ya go....
