Theme site linking structure question

Can anyone tell me if I have the correct understanding for a vertically themed site linking structure? Is it true that it helps get your site crawled and ranking well by the search engines?

Does the structure start with the general subject matter at the top and gradually work its way down to a specific info about the subject?

Here are some basic structures I though of:
Code:
1. Vertical links only

Website Promotion
^               ^

v               v
Search Engines    Directories
^               ^

v               v
Google           Yahoo!

2. Vertical links and across category pages

Website Promotion
^               ^

v               v
Search Engines <-> Directories
^               ^

v               v
Google           Yahoo!

3. Vertical links, across categories and individual pages

Website Promotion
^               ^

v               v
Search Engines <-> Directories
^               ^

v               v
Google      <->  Yahoo!
Of the three examples, which one do you think has the best linking from the point of view of the search engines? Why?

v, and <-> are two way links between pages.

Don't worry about this that much, any way you do it would be fine, but I'd say method 3 because the more links across your site the better.

All sites should be "themed" anyways, very rarely you find a site that is about cars and fine art, you know. As long as you stick to one topic and go from general to more specific you're fine - this isn't a big factor anyways.
