    Is Alexa Improving?

Alexa has made great play about the fact that its ranking system has been upgraded. It has also introduced a number of new features, such as the top 500. It also seems as though more people are catching on to it.

My question is: do other members believe that it is actually becoming more accurate and therefore a better way of assessing ranking, or not?

Alexa top 500 sites - good to see Google in the top 5 - a load of Korean sites feature too.

IMO Alexa's Site Popularity Meter's a good rough guide for traffic stats.

They've also setup a top 10 movers page

Alexa really changed for the better since Amazon bought them, before that there was a lot spam.

Using Pud's Jungle Scan you can submit a site and then it will record it's Alexa rank over time so that you can see traffic changes.

I have a traffic ranking of 488,000 . The biggest independant free site (www.thefreesite.com) has a rank of 6,000 . I'm sad, so far behind.

There are certainly flaws with Alexa, hence the high ranking of Korean sites (just wait until China learns about it ), but it is the best that exists.

With regard to all rankings, it seems as though Alexa ranks sites in the top 4 million or so. If we assume that there are *only* 10 million sites - there are far more - then anything in the top 1 million is in the top 10%. Anything in the top 100,000 is top 1% and so good going. IMHO.

It is also worth noting how your competitors are doing. At present we are well ahead of all of our competitors. Usually by about 300,000 places. More interestingly, we are also ahead of many of the more well known SE European news sites - not bad for a consulting firm.

Our current position is about 82,000. We started in March at 2,500,000. It has taken a lot of work to get us up through the ranks. And the good thing about Alexa is that it no longer registers multiple visits by the same user and so it is difficult to artificially inflate one's own site.

(I should note that I have been reading Sitepoint and the forums avidly to pick up lots of tips about marketing, and which seem to have helped enormously. )
