You forgot about Magnetic Lasso which you can combine with all the other lasso, marquee and magic wand tools

I followed the pen tool technique exactly to the end, however when I get to the step where I click the layer mask icon, the selection goes away and the back ground is stil there. Any ideas as to what is happening?
