    images within e-mails

    Dear all,

I am trying to insert an image in to an e-mail I send out to the people on a mailing list. The problem I am having is that Outlook converts the image type to a different format and the image is then 300K + in size. How do I get it inserted as a small .jpg (JPEG) image format?

    Look forward to your replies,

    internationally

Does it? Never had that problem!

IMO you'd probably be better off NOT sending it with Outlook at all to be honest. There are pieces of s/w specifically designed for mass HTML mailing (though I can't think of any off the top of my head I know there are dozens).

The other option (and the option I favour) is writing a little ASP script (or PHP, or whatever) to send mail from your web server yourself. The code needed to do this is really easy and you literally write raw HTML into the email. Host your images on your web server - send out a HTML email that sources all of it's images from your server. Et voila, one small HTML email! Also you can decide whether you make your mailing list an SSI, a simple database or even (though this would be messy and lazy!) write the addresses into the code.

You could use mime headers and put the image
as a hidden attachment - then refer to it by cid...

Would that cause some mail servers to block the email? I thought IT managers got twitchy about "hidden" attachments. Just a thought - I don't really know.

I do it occasionally and it flies straight through
    all our scanners no problem.

If i was in a malicious mood i guess i could do the
    same thing with a virus...

That's the thing. Because you could I think that some mail scanners stop them. I'm tempted to try it now (not anything maliscious obviously -- just a JPG or something!)

    Ok :

I can send an wav encoded hidden in the file.
Then Open it up with the media player without prompting.

it will play the wav - and whatever else i want
to interlace with the wav - no problem.

    It goes through:

    Spam assassin,
    mail scanner,
    (both on server)
    and then Norton Antivirus scanners

it does that both out and back in.

It's an absolutely HUGE security hole - and i would
report it if i didn't enjoy using it so much!

    But then again...
You've got to know how to manually write
the MIME headers JUST right for it...
and then know how to interlace something for the
program to pick up - AND know how to write
for different programs depending on which one
is their default for playing it... and also
know how to hide it from the others... all without
loosing the normal wav - otherwise they'll know
    something is up!
