How are the interactive banners like "Punch the Monkey" and others built? How do I learn to do them? Are there any web sites dedicated to them? Any special requirements for the ad rotation software or web server?
    Thanks!

I believe the "Punch the Monkey is using Java. Most sites and advertising affliates will not allow you to use anything but an animated gif of less then 10K.

You may want to check further in the Promotion & Marketing forum.

Yes, it is made using Java. There was a good article in the magazine 'Web Techniques' a few months ago about creating them. You might want to check out their website (www.webtechniques.com).

I've seen punch the monkey banners built with DHTML too.

As MattC said it used DHTML. Java is simply to large and unweildy to use. The entire punch the monkey concept can be done in about 12-15K if you use DHTML compared 30-45K if you used Java.

The Punch the Monkey script is simply an Animated banner and some javascript loaded into either an Iframe or iLayer depending on which browser you use.

The boxing glove graphic is simply a layer that appears on mouseover and tracks the mouse. There are example scripts on how to do this at www.dynamicdrive.com and www.bratta.com/.
