    Favorite Forum Options

Im putting together a small forum for my site. I was wondering you opinions on options, add ons or special features you enjoy most about forums. For example you couldnt leave without text formating. Or forum search. What options do you find most used and needed. Which would you like to see most that you dont see very often?

    Hi!

I use the forum search about 100 times a day.

An auto-subscribe feature to threads that I post in is really nice.

The only text formatting that I use OFTEN is bold, but to have the others there is nice.

    Good luck!

Basically most features of vBulletin. I like especially the link where you can see all the new messages no matter in which subforum. ("Updated Topics") Anybody knows Burning Board by the way? It almost looks like vBulletin..

Also I think that the colors are very important, the orange-blue combination here at SitePoint is really cool. For example I prefer Virtualdr.com to Hardforum.com, because the latter one has unfriendly gloomy colors. Even though Hardforum is much bigger. In terms of traffic Hardforum must be the one of the biggest, sometimes up to 500 users online at the same time.

Derek M. Powazek's (community expert) opinion is that the color can even change the mood and thus the messages the users write.

i think the "Last Ten Posts by member" in the profile section is really good. Kinda helps me to keep track of where i have posted.

As far as my personal prefrences go.

    Must Have
    - user login and passwords
    - something quick to post links without knowing anything but the URL
    - something quick to upload/link to pictures
    - ability to edit posts
    - ip log of posters

    Nice to Have
    - user profiles
    - smilies
    - ability to delete threads easily
    - review of messages when posting a reply

    Bad/Annoying Stuff
    - all of those messy click this button to make [something] (ie: bold text)
    - confirming things six million times
    - too many cookie alerts

You can get rid of that in My SitePoint >> Edit Options.

If you're using vBulletin than you should probably add the "quick reply" hack.
