Are there any recommendations for reporting rankings in search engines?

If you use software to send automatic queries to Google they will ban you, not your site, you personally.

If you use the above link and don't abuse it, they won't ban you. I have used it for about a year.

Yeah, that's what I've read. I was just wondering if there is an automated way to print results of url/keyword ranking for the many sites we have.

Of course not, using that script they have no access to your IP address.... however there is the potential that they ban the server that script is sitting on.

I tried the script posted earlier in this thread, using one of my websites that's been established for a couple of years. To my surprise, I found that yes, the site IS ranked quite well for the keyword "numboernoen"!!!

    Ranking http://www.newenglandcoinco.com for keywords numboernoen

    I have top rankings for
    Alta Vista
    Entire Web
    Excite
    FAST
    GOeureka
    Google
    HotBot
    Lycos
    MSN
    Netscape
    Teoma
    Yahoo!

Cool, now all I need to do is get some numboernoen to sell, put them up on the site and watch them fly!

    LOL

    no, you got it wrong.

Google doesn't ban your site, they ban YOU. They ban the IP address of the computer you are using to access their site thousands of times a day.

Ok, I get it. They wouldn't ban me for one search, would they? Anyway, I'm on a cable broadband. I just switch off the modem and get a new ip when I turn it back on. LOL

What if you don't have a dedicated IP, i.e. yours changes?

Yes, exactly my point. Just log on AOL or something, and go wild. Something about this just doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

believe that at your own peril

google does ban sites - a google employee has stated such at another forum regarding a particular site using wpg.
it beg the question if true its open to abuse.
this was stated by google to a domain inflicted with a ban-
"were you using WebPosition Gold for this domain until recently? Looks like that's what did it for you. I'll re-enable your domain and you should be back in within a day or so. Please help spread the word that rank checking programs can lead not just to IPs being banned but trouble for domains as well. We did another pass to turn off a chunk of domains that use rank checking programs recently-Google's stance on automatic rank checking programs has been known for a long time, e.g.
    http://www.google.com/webmasters/dos.html
We take precautions to make sure that people can't just use a rank checker to hurt a competitor. I'm not aware of any report where an IP or domain was dropped for using a rank-checker where it turned out to be someone hurting a competitor. The domain in question was using WebPosition Gold."
---so i have spread the word to u guys as this is affects us all.

The problem is that they can't always tell which site you are looking up, so they ban your IP address instead.

And of course they aren't stupid so if they figure out you're on a dynamic IP they probably won't ban you.... but that may just make them look harder for which site is yours.

I'd like to know what these precautions are (and I'm not singling you out with this question, as I understand you're not a Google employee". It just seems to me that it would be easy to get your competition into trouble this way. Something about this just still doesn't add up.

Even if Google will un-ban a site, the fact that it was banned, even if just for a short period, is damaging. Not only that, but having your site banned temporarily can be a big benefit to your competition as well. Given these obvious factors, were it possible to get a site banned from Google in this manner, I would imagine that it would be about as popular as 'sport-clicking' Overture links.

    this isnt new news

getting your ip banned for using wpg goes way back-but it seems google is taking a tougher stance recently by potentially harming your domain. like some of the previous posts state there are other ways of checking your rank that are less risky. Caution is the word.

it's all about not abusing anything; you only should have to check your ranking once a month. So I use that script once a month. no harm there. Been using it for a year now and I have found it to be most accurate...
