    Definitive Google Guide?

I want to learn in-depth about the Google search engine, how it works, how to get my pages to the top etc.

What resources, apart from this forum obviously, should I be looking at?

yes - in the dim and distant past.

is there nothing google dedicated on the web? since google dominates the search engine world, I would have thought a site dedicated to providing information about google would be a real winner.

Do google themselves provide any information (white papers etc.) about the workings of their engine?

    look here http://www-db.stanford.edu/~backrub/google.html
you'll have got a lot of answers, but also a lot of new question!

in this document the google foundiers write:
There are two versions of this paper -- a longer full version and a shorter printed version. The full version is available on the web and the conference CD-ROM.

the long version on the web has been removed. Anybody has got it?

Download the pagerank tool and do some research yourself, thats the best way. You'll find that ranking high on google depends on 2 or 3 things.
