    Another Newbie Question

    Have a page on my website that looks fine in IE8, but terrible in Firefox. I have looked at it till I am blue in the face, and cannot see what is causing the problem. In FF the text just keeps getting bigger as you scroll the page.

    Here is first part of code (and yes I know it's very crude)...

    <html>
    <head>
    <title>Coin Hunting</title>

    <META NAME="keywords" content=" Coinhunting, Dick Stout, Metal Detecting, FMDAC, Treasure Hunting">

    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;charset=UTF-8">

    <style type="text/css">

    table {
    margin: 40px;

    }

    img {
    border: 4px solid black;

    padding-left: 30px
    padding-right: 50px;
    margin: 30px;

    body{font-family: Verdana; impress;}

    h1 {font-size: 25px;}
    h2 {font-size: 35px;}
    h3 {font-size: 30px;}

    text {font-weight: bold;
    font-color: black;
    }

    </style>
    </head>
    <body leftmargin="100" rightmargin="100">

    You shouldn't have 3 BODY tags for starters and for some weird reason you are setting two different font sizes on a specific item and thus they conflict. The markup needs cleaning up.

    Yes, just figured it out. Another problem on same page...when I look at this cluster the last three listings are in purple, not black?

    - You should close all tags: <h1><font color="black"><a>....</a></font></h1>
    - The <font> tag is deprecated, use CSS on the <a> tags instead

    Hey Barnum,

    I've taken your code sample and re-written it to be semantic HTML 4.01 Strict valid code I've kept the CSS in the head section of the document to keep things simple but if you have some spare time then read the SitePoint article Learn HTML and CSS: An Absolute Beginner’s Guide by Ian Lloyd. It's a lengthy article but it'll get you on the right path. If you have a spare bit of money then I would also recommend his book Build Your Own Web Site The Right Way Using HTML & CSS, 2nd Edition.

    I've only placed one h1 tag in the document as that is the general rule - One header 1 tag to each Web page. I've also replaced the list of h1 tags with a set of unordered lists because the page is displaying a list of links. I've used h2 tags to display each area. I've removed the hr / horizontal rule tag in favour of adding a top border to each h2 tag except for the first which has an id of "first" applied to it which links to the CSS where I have removed the top border for that specific h2 occurrence. Hope that helps you!

    I've checked the code in Internet Explorer 8, Safari 4, Opera 10.5x, and Mozilla Firefox 3.6 and everything is running fine. I've added my version of the code below which you can copy and paste or use as a template, whatever you like.

    Code HTML4Strict:
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd">
    <html lang="en">
