one time pop-up window a good idea?
What do you guys think, is pop-up window offering a newsletter a good idea? This would only happen once (cookie controlled) and would make it possible to stay in contact with the user.

Alot of people hate pop-ups. Because they are forced to see your ad or service. One to offer your newsletter would be fine I think. Just make sure it wont annoy them.

I would definitly say go for it. If its a one time pop up, people won't mind. I did that with a site of mine. My newsletter subscriptions went from about 1 or 2 signups a day to about 10 a day. I only wish I would have did it earlier. I have a button on my pop up people can press to never see it again using cookies. Works great.

It is definitely a good idea -- if SitePoint uses it, you can't go wrong.
I use it on my site, too, and it is effective.

ditto what mjames said. It's been very effective for me. You can also set it up to appear on a user's 2nd or third page view.

I'm using a popup window on one of my sites
So far, it has worked out great. No complaints from any visitors. And lots of subscribers to my e-zine. To create the popup effect, I used the Javascript generator in the members-only part of:
