Pattern fill `n PhotoShop

To whom it may concern,
I am atempting to learn PhotoShop over the weekend. Either my book has a typo or the program does. It explains an order to fill an area with a tiling pattern- "select an area with the Rectangular Marquee tool, choose Edit menu > Define Pattern, then deselect." The problem is when I click on the Edit menu my 'Define Pattern' is grayed out.
Any thoughts?

I have Photoshop 5.0 and it doesn't do that to me.

You might want to have something that will be your pattern in the selected area. A selection that is just blank won't work.

If you still have a problem, I suggest you visit www.designsbymark.com and go to his Photoshop Forum. There are a lot of Photoshop professionals there who are willing to give you any help they can.

I figured it out! The feather option was sit on 1 under Marquee Options. It needed to be on zero in order to 'define a pattern'.
