404 error problems with old joomla component/content

Hopefully someone will have an answer:-

6 weeks ago I had my Joomla site moved onto an html/java template. Googles webmaster tools is reporting lots of error 404's, these are the old joomla article names that are now the current html pages.

    for example:-

    http://www.method-statement-template...rticle/50.html

As the joomla files have been removed any ideas why they are still being picked up? all these are supposed to be from my sitemap which is:-
    www.method-statement-template.com/sitemap.html

    mm,

Very simply: Google (and other SEs) have a long memory. The best way to handle "retired" files is to provide a 301 redirect for them which the SE's can pick-up and use to modify their database.
