backing up database on the command line

Hi, I need to backup my database. I've previously used phpmyadmin but my server control panel doesn't seem to be seeing the database at the moment so I can't even open it up and save it using phpmyadmin.

The database is there because i can browse through it o the command line. Is there a command I can use to back it up and give me a file that I can take offline on to my computer for storage?

    ah of course.

I'm in msql on the command line and tried this:

    mysqldump --opt boudakicom_92331_db1 > backup.sql

but it just gives me an syntax error. Is this right. Documentation is a little confusing.
