If you chop images up into sections so they appear to download faster, does it actually make the image any faster downloading or is it just a visual effect?
The theory is that you may have areas of the image that have just a few colors. That being the case, you can run Image Optimizer or some such utility on the individual chopped pieces and reduce the color count on the pieces that have less than the 256 gif pallete. Lower color count=smaller file.
Result is the sum of the pieces is smaller than the whole image.
