How do you do those raised dots?

I've seen some images or buttons with what look like a small patch of raised dots, similar to what you'd find on audio equipment or braille buttons on elevators. How do you do this in Photoshop and will it work on black buttons?

You can do this in Photoshop or in Fireworks, not to mention Illustrator, Freehand, and more. All are easy. Here is how to do it in Photoshop 6 for mac or windoze.

Creat a new document and then create a new layer (if needed). Draw a circle with the Elliptical Marquee Tool (top left hand corner of the toolbox) by holding down the Shift key and making a round shape with your mouse. This will create a dotted circle that you fill (Edit > Fill) with the colour of your choice.

Double click on the layer you have created (and that the circle is in). This is will pop up a small window entitled Layer Style. Click on the Bevel and Emboss line and it will highlight itself with a checkmark. The larger menu to the right of the highlight contains all the details and tools you need to make the bevelled button. Choose between Inner Bevel, Outer Bevel or Emboss, etc. You can also place a checkmark beside the next option down, called Contour, to see some other effects.

Now preview your 3D looking creation.

    have fun!

if its the brail look i think your after, its simply just a white pixel above a black pixel, and no it wont work on a black background, it needs to be fairly light, yet still have some darkness and colour in it.
