i had a blackberry but downgraded to a normal phone with a keyboard and 500 monthly texts. I save over $50 a month.

Smartphones are way to expensive for a single person and the benefits aren't that great. I use my laptop to browse the web.

My Blackberry is my mini-computer when I'm away from my laptop. It's not a replacement of course, but it has replaced my landline and my GPS unit for geocaching.

I am look at this Sony Ericcson Satio with fun admiration. The 12MB camera alone worth a a lot. Then I ask myself why would I have to be tied to an expensive contract that last 24 months? Logically, I shouldn't have it. But again I am taken over by its beauty and functionlity. Probably better than iphone? Is it? Has anyone got it?

No I don't have a 'smartphone'. I use an ordinary flip phone, pay and go. One of the things I hate about the mobile/cellular industry, are the high prices of the plans. Back in my day, we didn't use cell phones nor did we need them! Call me old fashioned, or just call me Steve.

I want an iPhone but I'm sensibly waiting for Apple to release the next incarnation before I tie myself into a contract (actually I might just go PAYG and use a Skype subscription). I really would love to make use of all those cool features that smart-phones offer, especially for running my business.

lol - Just calling people would be nice. I don't even have a mobile phone because we can't get a signal at home at all. I used to have a mobile phone years ago but when my car broke down in the middle of the night on a country lane miles from anywhere there was no signal on the phone so I threw it away and cancelled the contract.

    OOW dear!

Isn't it too drastic though to disown all mobile phones?

People have needs. I don't need to view the web on my phone. I barely need to call anyone - I prefer written communication via email (I'm not old). I love technology but I will only use what I need. I'm not going to have some company or anyone else tell me what I need. I can think for myself

Smart phones is a very advance technology, it as lots of features that enables you to do a lot of things.

To get all its features you need to be able to afford connecting it to a network that you will get all the feature. But if you cant afford to do this i think its best to use a normal phone, but if you can afford it i wouldn't denies that you use this phone.

I've got an iPhone 3G and have been very happy with it to be honest. I think I make use of most the functions to be honest - phone, sms, email, internet, twitter, ipod (music/video), GPS, and a handful of apps. The camera is awful though so that doesn't get used at all.

My contract finished now though so I'm thinking about which phone to get next. I may wait until the iPhone 4G announcement before buying anything (the 3GS wasn't enough of a change to warrant a new phone - hopefully this will be more substantial).

    I have a Nokia E71

...Don't really use all the features that much but I do have the google apps suite, including the near-awesome Maps which has come in very handy at times.

Also bought googsync to sync my google calendar with the native calendar function (the E71 has a dedicated button, so would otherwise go to waste )

See my pic (taken just earlier today as a matter of fact, I was photographing it with my junkyard of old phones )

How much do smartphones cost over there TT? And what sort of monthly rates do you have to pay for contracts? I actually use a skype-in number for my business as well so that people can chat to me when I'm out and about working.

    Edit:

Oh, and I'm a Crackberry user btw. Although I am suffering from a very real case of iPhone envy....

I have the G1 (T-Mobile HTC Dream phone or as known as the Google phone) and I use most of it's features. It has become very handy if I have a new registered member for my website, I need to do a search for a product I want. A useful app can scan a barcode and tell me where is cheaper to buy. Plus many other uses e.g. - checking my home network connection, etc...

I have a tracfone that I take with me when I'm away from the house. I recently purchased a 32G iTouch with many of the benefits of the iPhone without the monthly financial drain.
    The features are great!
The first app I downloaded was an electronic journal to replace the paper journals I've been keeping. Very happy with that iDiary app.
Next I downloaded the Dictionary.com app which is very convenient when reading and finding a word I want to look up. It also has word pronunciation wherever you have WiFi access to the net.
Of the apps that came installed I use the email, the Calendar, Photos, Contacts, YouTube, Stocks, Maps, Weather, Notes, Clock, and the Calculator (although I still prefer my HP48G for serious calculations).
The Safari Mobile Browser (SMB) is amazing. It makes me wonder if it is still worth the time and effort to code mobile pages since full sized sites are very easy to use with the SMB.
So, no I don't have a "smartphone". But if I ever get to where I need a regular cell phone contract again, I'll definitely consider a smart phone.

ps the iTouch would be nicer if it had a camera like the iPhone. Also the location feature is not as robust as the iPhone. Does the iPhone have true GPS or just a cell tower triangulation?
