What does Archiving Means ?

Hello,

I sometimes think what does archiving of data should do ?

If i have data in a table and i want to archive some data what I should really be doing which will mean that data is archived and what are its benefits ?

1. Should i just change the status of the record from active to archived ?
2. Should i move the archived data to another table , database or db server ?

What are we really trying to achieve by archiving the data ?
