Submitting our website?

Hey guys...

I don't venture into the world of search engine submittal much but I thought I 'd wander over here to take advantage of the information you all have.

I'd like to bump my company's website (www.nashvillecvb.com) up in the rankings. We just had a survey done of 76 random people in they which indicated the top search engines they used to find information on Nashville. The list is as follows:

Yahoo - 22
ALtavista - 2
AOL - 14
Google - 9
MSN - 5

The rest are assorted.

So my question would be how would I go about beginning our engine blitz? We do own a copy of WebPositionGold.

What's the first step? Should I submit to Yahoo by hand or use the software? Should I submit to DMOZ?

i always submit by hand.

for yahoo, you'll have to pay the commercial listing fee, unless you're in there already. sometimes you get lucky, and they'll add you without you having to do anything (pretty rare)

that site is listed in dmoz and google, so there's nothing more to do there as far as submitting.

hey creole,

before any submitting, I would check things like content matches META tags, keyword density, <H#> tags, ALT tags, Title and all that Jazz. Once all your ducks are in a row, then submit away. By hand.

Your site is already listed in Dmoz, and your on the first page of results for 'Nashville' in Google (and keep in mind that Google provides secondary results for Yahoo) so you're already performing well in the engines. You might try improving your keyword density or go after some recriprocal links to try and boost yourself up in the listings in Google. You could also look into Google Adwords to have your site listed next to the search listings and increase your exposure. Then of course, depending on your budget, you could go pay for clicks via Overture and that would get you into the top spots of most of the search engines you mentioned (Yahoo, Alta Vista, MSN...)

well.. if your on the 1st page under 'nashville' in google.. i'de leave things as they are.. your doing just fine.. outstanding job! keep up the good work!

AOL will be powered by Google by the end of the summer so you've got AOL taken care of too.

The only thing would be to get listed in Yahoo, which you should pay the fee for.

Once you're in Yahoo your Google listing should also increase.

If you are in DMOZ then chances are you're also already in AltaVista as well. To increase your AV rank do the same thing as with Google. Having people link to you using "nashville" in the link text.

To get high on MSN you need you be listed in LookSmart. You can do this through LookSmart itself, or through Zeal. I can't find myself recommending LookSmart though since they went to that PPC model.

The other way to get on MSN would be through Inktomi, but that will only deliver secondary results so at best you'll still be buried deep in the results.

I told you that I didn't build the site. But, since it was already done in FB I figured it couldn't hurt to learn.

I should have done my looking before I asked. It appears that we're already listed in Yahoo, Google AND DMOZ. (aren't they all pwoered by DMOZ anyway?

Not only is it true, but in fact for nearly every search engine, other than Inktomi, it's the most important factor, and it overwhelming is for AV and Google. You have to understand to that this is for search engines. As opposed to a search directory or search portal.

Directories:
DMOZ
LookSmart
Yahoo

Portals:
Lycos
MSN
HotBot
AOL

Search Engines:
Fast
AV
Google
Inktomi

A directory uses human edited listings, a directory can also act like a portal and get secondary results from elsewhere.

A portal maintains no index of their own and just borrows from elsewhere.

A search engine actually spiders the web.
