Using CSS layouts on new site

    Hi guys,

I've been building web sites for the past 6 years but I've always been accustomed to using HTML with the odd bit of CSS thrown in. In recent years I've been learning PHP and mySQL but these have just leant to the dynamic side of things.

Now, I'm designing a new personal portal after registering a new domain name and want to get the design right first time. I've decided on using XHTML, CSS (Level 1), PHP and mySQL, with the patTemplate system. The question I have is how to best learn how to layout my site using CSS. I've looked up some tutorials on using DIVS and P tags and have read the HTML Utopia articles but have yet to find anything solid tutorials on doing it. Thanks for any suggestions.

There is no clear-cut answer, it really depends upon what user-agents your target visitors will be using, and even with CSS-1 some modern version six browsers have quirks.

The previous replies and HTML Utopia covered some of the more common layout CSS references, another reason there are not solid rules is because not all user-agents interpret CSS correctly, or in various places the technical recommendations were a little vague.

I assume that's where the server-side scripting could help iron out more inconstancies by using detection scripts to help present relevant CSS.

Thanks for the response guys. I'll be sure to check out those links. I heard about the patchy support alright, xmlcoder, althought Im prepared to test and tweak if needed.
