I just saw that my /tmp dir on my red hat box was using about 2 gig of space. Most of these were in very large .wrk files.
Can I remove these?
What are they and why are they so big?

.wrk files are usually temp files created by mod_gzip, at a guess your mod_gzip config is set to keep work files and not delete them.
