    Problems with changing directory properties

Ok, i need to chmod a couple directories so that i can upload images to them from a web page, so i go to do it in my ftp program. I changed them, went back to my page, tried it and i got an access denied error message.

So, i tried it again. same thing. each time my ftp program (Crystal FTP) said that the permissions were 644.

By now i'm rather confused and think that maybe it just doesn't know what it's doing.

So, i open up SSH and login. I try chmod 766 dir_name
now, i don't know how to display the permissions in SSH, but Crystal FTP says it's still at 644.

I have no idea why it's doing this, but any insight would be helpful.

And btw, it's off of a shared hosting account, so i don't have root access.

    Try logging in with http://www.web2ftp.com
They can connect through SSL aswell.
You should be able to see the permissions from there.

I'm not entirely sure I wanna pretty much give them my server's user/pw.

Even though it says SSL, I see no evidence of it on that first page.

Well I've seen it recommended here a few times and I consider it to be safe.

    Yea i undestand that.
I'm just very hesitant to hand over my site's user/pw to a site i know nothing about.
Not to mention that it's not SSL on the first page, and who knows who might be watching that site.

But to get back on topic, anyone have any clues why the server might not accept the chmod commands?
Or rather, accept it, but not actually perform it?

well, u typing FTP commands and it aint working ? well i think it maybe a prob with ur server. but first check ur own FTP software if they provide automatic automation to CHMOD 755 or maybe even CHMOD 777. that'll help u to access and upload the stuff. if it still doesnt work out, check it through the trial version of CuteFTP or Ws_FTP, they can do it automatically for u. if it still doesnt work out, than contact the host !

what a fun time i've been having with this...

my ftp progie does it graphically, or by entering the number.
i also used the chmod command itself through SSH as stated above.

I've submitted a support request and posted on their forums. But nothing yet.
