Are multiple domain names a good idea?

    Hi,

I'm in the process of starting an e-commerce site. I will sell mostly in the UK but will also ship worldwide. I have bought the .co.uk domain.

I'm wondering if I should also buy the .com domain. This would cost me 100 as someone already has this but they will give it up for 100. If so which domain would it be best to market the site under; .com or .co.uk

My only concern is that when I want to buy something in the uk I will often search google.co.uk and check the "pages from the UK" radio button in google. I do this so I only get UK based sites which I know will deliver to the UK.

I'm not sure if this is common practice among other users but if it is my site wouldn't show up for those users.

For branding purposes, it's essential to get the other TLD's if you can. If you don't you may be embarrassed to find some pornographic or casino site has purchased your name with a different TLD. The white house site (whitehouse.gov) is a classic example: the .com version has nothing to do with the white house.

If you do not have .com there may be copyright issues. Take care.
    Good luck.

I suppose that is good idea. But at the same time you will need to develop all domain names and spread between them.

My suggestion will be go for .com domain in terms of marketing and SEO.

You can add blog or links to your .com domain from .co.uk ..have a redirect link from .co.uk to .com but make sure you have different contains on both site.
