Thanks for getting back to me, c2uk. In WordPress, I'd cut down the feed in the administration area, Settings > Reading, "For each article in a feed, show - Summary" and I'd cut down the number in "Syndication feeds show the most recent" (it was 100). I did this before I posted this thread but the changes were slow to take effect.
I'd read somewhere that Feedburner can only handle feeds of under 512K. So my feed must have exceeded this size although I'd received no warning. Lesson learnt.
