Your Chance To Say Thankyou And Goodbye To Dan

When I announced the tragic passing of a treasured SitePoint community member Dan Schulz, amongst all the emotion, so many of you raised the question on how we could both honor the memory of Dan and also show our support to Dan's family.

We shared in that sentiment, so we developed a site in remembrance of Dan.

    http://www.danschulzrip.com/

One important aspect of the site is the ability to donate directly to Dan's family via paypal.

The passing of a family member is a challenging time, both emotionally and financially. In the case of Dan's family, this is especially difficult, as his mother had also recently passed earlier in 2009.

Dan was always so generous with his time, and now it's your chance to say thank you. If you can spare it, we'd like to encourage you to donate money to Dan's family using this PayPal Donation page. It's fast, secure, and goes directly to Dan's family.

I would also like to share something that Bill (Dans brother), emailed to me late last week.

"Your support and understanding in helping Dan become a valuable member in the internet community cannot be expressed enough by our family and close friends here. I personally would like to thank you for taking the time out of your busy day to call me and express your condolences for the loss of Dan, and to say how proud we are of him for the impact he was able to make across the world."

Even if it's just a small token of appreciation I know it will go a long way in helping Dan's family.

It's a wonderful thing you guys are doing. I'm honored to be the first (or among the first) to post on this thread. I admired and respected the guy from the first day I came around SP asking for help. Dan went above and beyond the call of duty, as he did so many times with so many people.

One thing I think he did that remains a legacy on SP is the tradition of helping -- something perhaps some people here take for granted. This is perhaps the only forum of its size and collective expertise that a newbie can come to, ask something stupid or obvious (as I did, dozens of times, and still do now), and be answered politely and helpfully. Dan never denigrated a poster no matter how inexperienced, ill-informed, or discourteous. He always answered in a friendly and helpful fashion, and helped them overcome whatever problem or frustration they were having. I'm not a tenth the coder/designer he was, but whatever I've achieved, I owe a great deal of gratitude and credit to him, and whatever I've contributed to this community, it's in large part because Dan and others like him made me feel, not like a n00b who deserved ridicule and derision because of my lack of knowledge, but a valued member of the community whose interest in Web design and so forth counted far more than a lack of expertise or knowledge. I felt welcomed, and as a result I stuck around, learned a few things, and can "pay forward" some of what I've received from Dan and others to people now coming in asking for help or support.

Knowledge can be taught to just about anybody. What Dan taught was beyond knowledge: he practiced an open-handed, tolerant generosity of time and expertise that can't be taught the same way you can teach someone to code a page or make a graphic. But I think many of us learned from his example.

    His is a tremendous loss.

I'll donate soon, but be VERY careful with paypal for donations. If you raise a big amount paypal will mark it suspicious confiscate it all.

I do not trust and do not use PayPal (and be aware there are a group of countries who do not have PayPal and people living in those countries will not be able to make a PayPal donation). Are there plans for any other method of payment? I think I still have Dan's address somewhere, but since he rented, I wouldn't know for sure if his family would still get his mail.

I am having a real problem.
I want to do something to mark the passing of a real friend but I'm not sure that money is the way to do it.
A few years ago Dan was having major problems with his computer; so bad in fact that he had resorted to using the one in his local library.
We had become good pals through SitePoint and he had given me a huge amount of help over the years ( I came to own my web development company by accident, and was really in at the deep end ) so I felt that I should help him out by buying him a new computer.
Now this is where my problem comes in; he wouldn't accept it, saying that he wasn't a charity case but that if I could give him some work so he could earn it, it would be a great help.
Unfortunately, I had since those early days employed someone to do the stuff that Dan excelled at; so it never happened.
So there is my problem. I don't think Dan would appreciate being remembered by donations.
I'm sure that we must be able to come up with something more fitting.

The ones that learn by reading.
The few who learn by observation.

Thank you, Shayne, for making this site!

While I agree that donating money is not by itself a proper way to remember someone by, it can perhaps help ease the financial burden of a funeral. Furthermore, it is more practical than sending flowers (especially since few of us would know where to send them).

Guys, while it's important to have feedback and so on, I don't think it's appropriate or constructive to have any aggro in a thread about respecting Dan's memory. To that end I have removed some posts and the contents of these will be dealt with privately.

This is not to say that feedback is not welcome, but it would be greatly appreciated if you would please send a PM instead of causing a ruckus.

I dedicate this source code to the man, in his own style ( jQuery-less, Schulz Reset CSS, Validates HTML 4.01 Strict ). He was always a man of clean, minimal markup and didn't rely on DOM libraries.

Thank you for doing this, Shayne and the rest of SP.

I would also like to say that the guys/gals at SitePoint had nothing but the best intentions when creating this site, they didn't mean any harm and just wanted to do what they thought best.
