What is asterisk and asterfax? what is the use of it? I was asked about it in an interview. Anyone can explain the use of it?

If the term is not associated to web technos like PHP, why did they arised the question.

Asterisk is a telephony exchange, and Asterfax is a fax gateway. Neither is written in PHP, although theoretically it would be possible to write an interface to either in PHP
