Dan – you were truly one of the Good Guys, always willing to share your vast knowledge, asking nothing in return. You gave me a chuckle every time you referred to me as 'boss' while I was your Team Leader. And there was that special bond between us: a shared birthday.

Why is it that the good ones often die so young? You will be dearly missed, my friend. Dearly.

I remember how he told, taught members here how to fix the problems. Even corrected me once when I was spoon feeding a member by giving out the codes.

    Will miss you.

I'm finding it pretty difficult to read this thread again, but I just wanted to answer a quick question about if should we put together some sort of fundraiser for Dan's family. I know personally it's certainly something I'd contribute too, but I just want to have a chat with Dan's brother before we kick off anything.

We're also thinking about how we can honor Dan's commitment and contribution to the forum in more lasting ways than just fun raising. We've got a couple of ideas, but if anyone has a suggestion, please send it to me via a PM.

It's so touching to see how many people have commented on this thread.

Oh my goodness! This news has shocked me

Echo what everybody else will say here. He was a talented individual that in the few times I spoke with him personally always treated me with respect - and I think I ended up on his list of "Sitepoint Fanatics" on twitter, which was an honour in my eyes

Nothing left for me to say but RIP Dan, my thoughts are with his family & friends at this horrible time.

Haven't been on here recently, but saw the fan page on FB and but felt the need to pass on my thoughts and best wishes to his family during this difficult time.

RIP Dan - the World has undoubtly lost a talented individual who had the patience and willingness to share all the information he knew.

Dan's the one (along with another person, a good friend of Dan's) over at Digital Point (they came up first on teh Googles when I first sought CSS and HTML) who pushed me in the right direction re code, esp. minimal markup, which was his main thing. And then he pointed me (and so many others) to Lloyd's book and SitePoint.
That he was trying to clean up Turdpress and make it clean and valid markup Every Time was a great thing. Hopefully the others at semanticwp will keep up the work!
He's only a few months older than I am. That was always a bit hard to keep in mind.
I was willing to help Dan out a year ago? when all his Frankencomputers died at once, and I'm willing to do it again for his family if they want to do a memorial or something.

Dan was one of the first people to befriend me and welcome me to sitepoint. He was a true gentleman, always going out of his way to help others. He was an inspiration.

This sure is a sad news. I really don't know what to say.
I often meet him in different forums...
have some different insights in some topics but I know he's a good guy.

Dan eventhough, I don't know you much. I hope you'll rest in peace.

Well, it's been a looooong while since I posted on the forum. I think this is a more than appropriate moment to break that drought.

Really quite shocked by this. It's only with hindsight that I realised I hadn't seen anything from him on Twitter for a while, the last tweet being somewhat prophetic.

I never had the pleasure of meeting the guy, unfortunately, but that doesn't make it any less 'immediate'. Dan did a great deal for the community on SitePoint and it's great to see that it's not gone unnoticed.

Thoughts go to his family and friends.

Yes, it's a great shock and Dan will be sadly missed.

Like others above I used to chat to him daily online and I chatted to him when he came out of hospital and he seemed to be recovering.

It's a very sad Day - bye Dan RIP.

I cant believe it, this is sad sad news, I feel like I new Dan as a friend even though I only ever talked to him in the virtual world. I guess on the internet you never expect anyone to go so in a way its a bigger shock he will not be around sitepoint anymore as we view the web as an eternal thing.

Very very saddened by this news, my heartfelt sympathies go out to his family.
