    Finding out a hosting company

    Hi there,

    I have a question.

People have been finding out the name of my hosting company & harassing them even though all of my domains are privatized.

    1. How are they doing that?
    2. How can I find out the hosting company of a company that just spammed me 30 times today?

    Thanks

    Michelle

They are probably doing a WHOIS look up.

That shows the name of the hosting company even if the info is private?

Your server has to be hosted somewhere. Anyone can lookup that "where," otherwise no one could access your server.

Lookup the owner of the IP address, and/or do a trace route of the address.

And just a note, a hosting company is not synonymous with a data center, as a lot of web hosts are just resellers.

What is one of your domains, I'll see if I can figure it out and then tell you how I do it.

I don't understand what you are saying.

No one needs to access my server BUT ME.

Can you give me the URL of the site that will:

    1. Give me the IP address of a domain
    2. do a trace route of the domain's IP.

    Thank you

Sorry, I don't understand your instructions.

See when I went to lookup my domain name in that samsapde.org URL, it shows my hosting company (is there not a way to get rid of that?)

When I go to look up the spammer's domain Tabumedia.net I see no hosting company

    Why is that?

    Thanks

it's because they have some lame whois protection from whoisprotection.cc but they are hosted by "byethost.com" which is again hosted by "xlhost.com" but "byethost.com" is where they are hosted.

It sounds like your domains aren't actually privatized.

Even if they are though, you could always ping your domain name to get the ip address, go to Arin dot net and see who controls the IP block and then email their abuse contact (likely to be your webhost if the IPs are SWIP'd to them.)

What are they harassing your hosting company for? Unless you're spamming, infringing on copyright or breaking the law most hosting companies could care less what your content is.

k, so I e-mailed xlhost b/c the other one has no contact info that's easy to get to.

Of course my domains are all privatized. I started privatizing my domains the minute that service came out from GD. In fact I *****ed to them about the fact that they didn't have something protecting people who work from home & don't want to divulge their private details. Within a few months suddenly privatization was launched.

As for why they are harassing my hosting company, b/c I out terrible ICs online who come our way & some are quite dysfunctional, so if they find their post, they start threatening & harassing & this one guy was calling my hosting guy 11 times in just one day alone & e-mailing, lying, etc.

LOL, they don't end up on my blog b/c they are nice sane people.

    Thanks

    Michelle

contact your hosting provider and ask to lock all the private information of your domain or else register your website at privacyprotect.org/ to prevent your private information form others

    Hi Try
    Code:
    http://who-hosts.com/
it will provide you with the host address for the website the spam is coming from, its quite a useful tool.

There is no way to "mask" your hosting company. In order to be found, a website must have public DNS and a fixed IP. Given an IP address, it is trivial to run down who owns it and what it is doing. Now, your privatized domains are working--they are harrassing the host not you, correct?

Anyhow, I'd just find a good hosting outfit who doesn't care about harassment and carry on. Another option would be to switch to a colocated setup where you are actually the host, the box just lives in some rented space at a datacenter.

In any case, there isn't a good way to mask a public-facing internet host. I'd chalk it up to the price of doing business when you "out terrible ICs"

k, thanks. While no one likes to be threatened etc., I don't want people around me to have to suffer at the hands of these crazy ICs. I can deal with it b/c it's my blog, but others shouldn't be threatened or blackmailed.

Thank god my hosting guy knows what it's like to deal with terrible workers who play games, lie, etc. so he's taking it in stride.

I think the problem was he wasn't telling them to go take a hike (I'm being nice here & I feel he should have done that after the one guy called him 2 times.

Can't budget our a dedicated server at this point. Soon though

    Thanks

    Michelle
