My point is I need to figure out where that extra pixel of space is coming from in IE8.

Because the site is not being displayed with IE 8 but rather with IE 7.

Pressing F12 in IE 8 will open the Developer Tools. On the menu bar at the very end. "Browser Mode", "Document Mode" will tell you how the page is being rendered.
