The oldest man in Africa marries a teenager!

I came across this story of 112 years old man who married 17 years old teenager. This is the first time ever a man of this age marries someone so young. I am speechless, not because of the marriage per se but the fact that a man of his advanced age still fancies a woman.

Have ever heard of marriage with greater age difference between the couple than this?

The BBC’s Mohamed Olad Hassan in Mogadishu says the marriage in the town of Guriceel is being described by Somalian historians as the first of its kind in the Horn of Africa nation for over a century.
    Geesh, thank God for that.

You may not care, but there are others who do.

Simply, if you don't care, don't comment. Simple.

If this story is true and if the girl wasn't forced, then I see nothing wrong with it, to be honest. Slightly bizarre? Certainly.

Well, if they're both happy, let them, say I. Sure, it may be weird, but there are far weirder things out there.

Maybe the man doesn't even know his real age and is closer to 70 or something. Not uncommon in some third-world countries.

The man was born in 1897. In fact, he told the BBC that he has got a birth certificate to prove it. You can see this BBC article here

Speaking of norms, men normally don't reach that age. Honestly, I still do not quite get what you find intriguing about an old man who still has sexual interests. It may seem completely absurd to you, but it really isn't.

It's probably the only thing most men are reliably interested in throughout their lifetime.

I don't see anything wrong with it really, age is really a relative concept, if their both happy then there's nothing wrong with it, anyway the western world doesn't exactly have a good reason to object, we can't even get most of our marriages to stick, were not exactly the kind of nations who should be giving marriage advice

I don't think marriage is viewed the same there as in most of the West. If it's a tribal thing, it may be more of a business transaction. Either way, I don't expect them to start a family, or even consumating the marriage.

I'm concerned about those who make other people's lives their business. Because the next step is to try to tell others how they should live their lives.

What are you on about? This is the General Chat section, and frankly there are all kinds of stories posted. If the story is interesting enough for all World media to carry, it is worthy to be posted here too.

If a thread is of no interest to you, don't post a reply. I am not going to consult you as to what I post and what I don't. You get it.

I am not against this couple at all. I am happy for them. I say, good for them. But I was merely commenting on the fact that a married couple of that age difference is very rare.

mizwizzy, you are being hysterical here. The man and the girl are obvious in love with each other. You comment is uncalled for.

The girl is 17 years old can legally marry. She can marry whoever she fancies. In UK, girls can marry at the age of 16.

that wasnt being hysterical thats voicing my opinion which like you I am entitled to display - u wouldnt want to see me hysterical

you mean the man and the child - the teenager the 17yr old no 17yr old knows the meaning of love at that age, gimme a break

she was married off, its quite different to her marrying whoever she wants - im sure she didnt look at that old dude and go omg i have to have him for my husband its gross and disgusting and i still stand by my comments

as for comparing teenagers in the uk to those there, well thats another story - i still dont believe kids should marry no matter where they are

You are all actually discussing about something that may have not happened according to the article itself. It does say that there's no proof at all and that he doesn't even know where the story comes from.

But he's right on something: there's a a news, someone comments on it, others repeat it, and it is taken as a fact with no background whatsoever.

This is the quote from the BBC.

Mr Dore told the BBC he was born in Dhusamareeb in central Somalia in 1897 - and has a traditional birth certificate, written on goat skin by his father.
Molona, forget about the first link that I posted. I tried to change but the thread somehow did not let me edit it. So I posted a second BBC link describing the story more fully. The BBC link here is more authoritative because it got the story first.

She is reportedly happy with her new husband. We can only go by what the article says. The girl was not married off. She made a deliberate decision of marrying him. You are entitled to your opinion but keep in mind that It was the girl's choice. Got it? You cannot take away somebody's choice. Can you?
