Writing Transitions: You Can't Get There From Here

Transitions are crucial in helping your reader figure out where you're going. Without suitable transitions, your writing can seem disorganized and more a collection of notes than one coherent article. And there are enough thought fragments from those twitterpated with technology already, we don't need more.

Consequently, transitions signal to the reader what's to come. Sequence, change of direction, pro and con can all seem a bit confusing without the telegraphing transitions can provide.

So, what are we talking about here? I am glad you asked:

Signal a cause-and-effect relationship with: The reason is simple, consequently, therefore.

Show a comparison or the other side with: On the other hand, in contrast.

Emphasize a key idea with: More importantly, indeed.

The takeaway is, your writing will flow better and come together in the reader's mind as one complete article when you use transitions.

I think giving key points to readers can give them enough idea on what they are reading.

The point is to avoid an article or blog post coming off as a bulleted list without the bullets. While you don't need a transition every paragraph, in the right situation it helps keep people reading.

We're talking about creating "flow" or polish in writing when talking about stuff like transitions. This is not needed with 140 characters or the one-sentence comment.
