I'm not sure if this question is in the right forum. (that's my disclaimer

On Mac OS X, the Safari browser bookmarks have an icon to the left of the site's title. I'm not sure if every browser in every platform has this or not. But anyways, the default icon is a blue globe, but many sites have a custom one. (Like apple's site has a silver apple, sitepoint has its blue and orange symbol, etc).

I'd like to know how to make my own custom icon show up instead of the default.

It's called a favicon and if you enter that into your favourite search engine you'll find out everything you need to know about it.

It might also be worth checking out this recent thread, which discussed tricks of the trade for getting Favicons to work properly in IE:
