Save as and NOT open Directly

    Hi,

Previously when I download certain files in zipped format, like http://mysite.com/123.zip by clicking the link, a small window will come out asking me whether I want to open it or save it (save as) in my local drive.

Now, I do not know what happen, when I click (or double click) the link, the small windows does not come out, instead the zipped file will be downloaded automaticcaly and load my default zipped application (Winace) and open it.

    My question:

    1) What's wrong?
    2) Is this something related to IE option setting?

    Thanks in advance.

I assume you are using IE. If this is the case, open an explorer window and go to Tools->Folder Options.

From there, choose File Types. Then scroll down to the .ZIP extension, click it, and then click on the Advanced button.

There will be a check box at the bottom which says confirm open after download. Make sure this is checked.

Thanks, problem solved. Why my setting changed? I did not touch anything of my file type, or some other zip utilities change the setting?

Yup. But as long as people choose to use Windows, I have found that helping them in a friendly way gains more support than complaining about their choice of OS.

Heh, easy tiger. My explanation was not unfriendly, but more why Windows probably randomly chose to change how it behaved with regard to ZIP files. IN all essence the real reason it changed was because of some program he installed, some file he downloaded, so ActiveX control that got triggered when he was visiting some malicious website... it could be anything. And the cause of that... Windows. So I think I was quite accurate.

Hey hey hey, don't bash windows! If it weren't for Windows, people like me wouldn't own their own businesses! *waits for the sarcastic comments all made in good humor towards him*

Maybe he could have also said to open it from the current location and then accidentally clicked "Do not ask me about these file types again"....

it might have happened coz u unchecked the "ALways ask before opening this type of file" and clicked on "open" while dloading a .zip file.

Yeah, it's sometimes conveniant to have the cofirm/don't confirm checkbox, escpecially if your d/l'ing lots og small files (like fonts) all at once...

And hehe, windows is great... can't really see exactly WHY I would want to change from windows XP as my primary OS.

I'll go with you on this one. When i read that MS as saying winXP would change the way you use your computer, I thought it was another marketing strategy...I'm glad i was wrong. It's been one hell of a ride for me since i switched to winXP.
