    What's your favourite material?

There's already "Who's your favourite actor?" and "What's your favourite sport?" so I thought I'd add to them with another fairly standard one.

My favourite is wood. I think it's fabulous stuff. It'll never get old and always looks attractive (if not, it's the fault of the carpenter). It's renewable, biodegradable and safe. Plus the things people can do with it are wonderful. From ornate sculptures to huge ships. If Jesus was around nowadays, he'd be making a space shuttle out of the stuff.

My least favourite is thin polyethylene (namely plastic bags). I can appreciate it's useful, but it's pretty horrible. Plus when it gets wet, it's disgusting.

Come on people, I know this is something we all think about regularly.

Glass. It gives me shelter while still giving me sunlight and views of nature. Well, a small garden, but I had crazy robin repeatedly throwing itself at the kitchen window for 10 minutes this evening. Thump; 20 seconds later.. thump; this happened for at least ten minutes.

    Metal... namely gold

Seriously though, I never though about materials this way. Wood is definitely great, so is metal.

I will stay with metal though. So many kinds of metals, so many things can be done with it.

I guess it really depends on the item in question.

For example, wood, metal and porcelain are all great, but...

I would not want wooden silverware.
I would not want a toilet made of metal.
nor would I want a porcelain car.

I instantly thought 'art materials', so I'll go with starkblank.

I view materials in context only.

    Glass
    Silk
    Wood
    Metal
    Stone
    Velvet
    Paper
    Canvas

and the list goes on and on. Even plastic has its place.

Personally, I like rock and stone.. but not just precious ones. I like how old they are, and I like the orderly arrangement of atoms ...

...by the way, this is the best 'favourite' thread of all time.

'Ey, that woman, and my two little nieces, fight for bubble wrap. And all three of them sit down, lined up, popping away until the whole sheet is gone.

    Amazing.
