    Custon icon design Qs

Someone wants custom icon design. I am no icon design expert. I said exclusive custom icons would cost them about 10 times as much than buying stock icons. Makes sense since you can sell stock(non exclusive) sets dozens of times over.

How long does a professional icon take to make? I estimate at least 2 hours per icon. Is this enough?

What would you say a custom icon is worth, per icon or set? I am talking about real pro icons, like best you have ever seen, not windows 95 type icons.

Depends whether the icons are exclusive or you retain the rights to resell. Pricing by icon or by time is more about how you will pay yourself for doing the work.

Icons have seen a recent resurgence with the new application stores and many large mainstream social media sites becoming increasingly recognised by them. As such there are good tutorials around on making your icons have a similar look/feel.

Yes that was exactly my question. How much would custom exclusive icons be worth?

And how long does it take a pro designer to design a pro icon?

How long is a piece of string?

Like any design, it is a matter of complexity in the design, resources on hand, and what is reasonable to the client. If you can eliminate as many 'unknowns' in the brief you will get a better estimate of the time involved.
eg. all icons will be 120px by 120px,
background colour is consistant green as per company logo,
remainder of icon to be in colour,
supply a consitant alternate version for rollover also etc etc

Typically once you have your size/style sorted, tweaking the actual icons and sourcing good resource material (if you aren't going to draw them yourself) is the time sync. I would guess after that it comes down to how many revisions you need to do and how fussy your client is. A good brief/contract should include a scope for this so you don't get into endless revisions and stuck with a 1 price fits all (ie. build in x amount of time for revisions and after that is exceeded an hourly charge).

I know this doesn't directly answer the "how much" question but at the end of the day you are the only one who knows your overheads and how much your minimum charge needs to be to make a profit.

I would estimate the cost on the following factors...

    • How many formats they require (ICO / GIF / PNG / AI / Vector, etc.)
    • What sizes the icons need to be (16x, 32x, 64x, 96x, 128x, 256x, 512x)
    • How detailed the icons need to be and how unique (from other icons)
    • Whether they need variations of the same icon (like several folder icons)
    • How many icons will be included in the pack (in total).

Basically factoring in if you made "platinum standard" icons the average prices I see are anywhere between $1 and $5 an icon, and for a pack 60 icons usually cost around $50-$100, 120 icons usually cost around $100 to $300 and 200+ go upward of $250 (these are all approximate values). What you end up doing though is entirely up to you, I would recommend checking stock icon websites to see what your competition charge.

A custom made icon can take 2 hours. Or it can take 10 hours. It depends on the type of icon and on your skill level. Same goes with the cost.

No one here can tell you what to charge or how much a custom icon costs, like Slackr said. No one knows your hourly rate, no one knows how and what you charge for work, meaning, an icon costs what you charge for it.

I know I am not being of much help in your quest, but it wouldn't make any sense in throwing around figures, in my opinion, and Slackr has provided a solid approach that can aid you in estimating and calcuating the cost.
