Competetor has link to your site

    Hi.

Was checking www.google.com to see how my site came up and when I did a search for the company name my site came up first and so did one of my competetors. When I checked out there site I found that they had a links page with a link to my site.

I thought what a idot they are sending people to my site which they were when I looked at my stats. But then I thought hang on he came up second on the list in google when you search for my company.

Is this bad, should I have them remove the link?

    You have two choices here:

Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.

    or

    Beware of Greeks bearing gifts.

Just leave it alone, if he's giving you traffic, more power to you.

It is but if you get your site listed under theirs in Google you are even. Who is bigger, you or them (who has the most to gain out of this)??

See if you can get a sub lising on google, then he will be third. Or help a fe other people that come up for that search term (that arent competitors) to get a higher ranking by doing a link swap.

Sorry seanlivo but I don't see what your problem is, your only concern now should be to keep your site above his on google.

If your really worried about the link then ask them to remove it, but before you do, ask why they link to you......It's hardly a hanging offence yet .

Thanks guys, I'm only really concerned about google.com. I might just leave it because I am getting traffic from their site.

Actually. I constant scan overture's results using there tool and I put keyword in my title and metas that I see draw high numbers of results, there are many high result words that are not hard to target at all. Linking to a competitor's site, especially on your frontpage will make you show up under their company results on google. However, very few people actually search for a company name, they usually search for a general phrase.

They are a high ranking site. Therefore, the link from their site to yours will boost the ranking of your site. Without that link, maybe he would have the higher ranking site?

I'd say - he's crazy because he's giving you traffic as well as possibly boosting your google pagerank a bit.

Now might not be the time to get competitive. Surely you might have ideas that would benefit both of your companies? It looks like he is cooperative.

He's not really crazy, because there is a method in this. I run a free stuff site. Lets say I give a free link on my frontpage to www.totallyfreestuff.com and they don't give me a link back. When google re-indexes my pageI will now show up when people search for totally free stuff . Linking to competition can give your pages good results under your competitors company's names' searches. There's a method to the madness.

Who cares if he comes up on a search for your business. How often do people type in the name of a business when doing a search? Seriously, if they're searching then chances are they don't know any businesses and are looking for one.

Whats important is ranking above him on your generic keyword searches. So if you're both in the dry cleaning business then being ranked high under "Dry cleaning" is far more important than under "Bob's Discount Dry Cleaning"

Is his/her site sending you any business? What he(she)'s doing is giving people alternatives (to your site) when they look for your site. This way they'll visit his/her site, too.

Is his/her site something you want your link on (as in associated with)??

It's up to you to decide what's best for you. If you don't like having your site on your competitions site, ask them to remove it.
