How far do you live from your customers?

I have a plan/dream to be able to work remotely. I'd like to be able to work from a base in Spain.

I see there are two possible options open to me.

    1) Run a web development business with a reasonably regular income stream.
    2) Run a website/s that makes money.

I think option 1 is easier to achieve if you live close to your market.

How far do you think a web developer can live from his market?

Do you have clients from another country?

What percentage of your clients have you met in person?

As far as you want. With the advent of email, chat, and video conferencing (with whiteboard capabilities), a face-to-face isn't entirely necessary if both parties are comfortable with it.

Some clients would rather have face-to-face contact, though.

    So, it depends.

95% of my clients do not live in Germany. It works well for me. I have clients from Tokyo to Brussels, to New York, spread all over the globe with no problems.

Most of my clients are local small/medium businesses. I actually enjoy getting out and meeting them.

    I do have some national/international clients - maybe 10%.

I usually don't meet my customers in person because they live too far away (all over the place), generally it doesn't matter though because I am always available on Skype, MSN, Email and other places so I give my clients plenty of time to have live dicussions about their purchases / work being undertaken.
