Hiya
This kind of thing can be quite fun. Unfortunately there is no "step by step" advice that anyone can give, since every old photo needs individual TLC.
Maybe you can post the photo here for suggestions? If it's a personal project and you're worried about privacy, just blur out the faces. We'll be able to see what needs to be done without the faces anyway :-)

Lookin good

There's a decent book in print on the subject: http://www.digitalretouch.org/
Or there are tutorials, but a lot depends on the quality of the image and what it needs done to it:

Will post image as soon as I have access to the photo album.

okay, here it is.
scanned it 600 ppi as bitmap
to get it to uploaded; saved it as gif at 45% rescale.
hp scanner took some of the yellow out.

WAIT!
I can't delete that last image or I would.
Found a much better anniversary pic.
Didn't use this before, as you can see, the doorway I cropped out has an unsavory capture of a man, behind the wedding cake.
- used the square marquee to copy the curtain down over him, but now I have to finish the bottom. Either draw a convincing wavy line near the base, which I haven't been able to do, or set the checked curtain behind the open chair section and presents, as if it went all the way down.
How would this be done? Also, how can I blend the hard edges of the pasted curtain sections? Please speak slow, loud and clear. I'm green at this.
(I'll crop the whole image square when done)
Hi
This is fairly simple. I'll be happy to do it for a fellow sitepointer if you want to PM me.
Cheers

Thanks kish, I pm'd

Thanks to kish, who so generously stepped forward, I now have a professional quality recreation of the wedding day. - Involving quite a bit more than what was mentioned on this thread.
He's about to brighten someone else's day too when they see it framed.
I'm impressed, and not just by the graphics.
Awesome. Thanks
