What's the weirdest thing you've eaten? (Also: Matt eats a grasshopper)

Matt Mickiewicz is visiting SitePoint HQ at the moment. The folks at Grasshopper.com mailed him some chocolate coated grasshoppers, and we saved them for his visit. Here he is chomping down on one of these Thai delicacies.

My alarm clock...pure safety measure for a procrastinator.

Other than that, no, can't think of anything I've ever eaten that could fall into the "weird" category. I have a very humbling palate.

Oh god loads. Reindeer, Alligator, Snails, Octopus.

Almost all were disgusting. Except Snails, they were quite paletable!

I have a reputation for enjoying unusual "combos".

The most bizarre that comes to mind is ... Tinned sardines mixed with tinned spaghetti in a sealed toasted sandwich (as made using a sandwich toaster machine) - lovely.

Can I just say...yuck! ewwww! Blech!

I've eaten grasshopper and squid and deer and elk and snake and snails. Meh.

The oddest combination I've seen (though I just couldn't eat it) was a craving my wife had when she was pregnant with our oldest son. She cooked corn beef hash, scrambled eggs in it and cooked in salsa and cheese. And yes, it looked and smelled as bad as it sounds.

Rocky Mountain Oysters (bull testicles) at a Halloween party when i was 5.

My dad told me they were Meat Balls, he was correct just in a different way. Either way it was cool having hair on my chest at 5.

Been on a bit of a strange animal eating session lately so Kangaroo and Ostrich I suppose in the last couple of months... Ostrich tastes far nicer in my opinion.

I find some of the "wierd" foods that people have listed extremely amusing but I guess it's all just a matter of perspective.

Squid = Calamari, we used to hand that out as an appetizer when I worked at the Olive Garden while people were waiting for tables.

Deer/Elk/Bison = Yummy and pretty standard around here. Go to any farmer's market and you can buy it there.

Chicken legs = I'm assuming you must mean chicken feet. Everyone eats chicken legs.

Pigs feet = Not much around here, but many people like them

Kangaroo/Ostrich = You won't find that in Canada anytime soon

Grasshoppers = I'll pass on those

Snails = Escargot, an expensive dish in your fancier french restaurants

I suppose the weirdest thing I've eaten is live termites in Belize. The guide said they tasted like carrots and he was right.

I'm going to bet that you will soon. Walkabout (a UK pub chain that seemingly almost every Aussie who has travelled has worked in for a bit) have started serving Kangaroo burgers on their menu. They insist it's real kangaroo. I think it's just the beef burgers that have gone off.

Sounds like the kind of food a pregnant person would eat

weirdest thing for me was a chicken foot at a dim sum restaurant. After that would be these really strange slimy balls of doughy stuff at a Vietnamese restaurant. Next after that was the deep fried shrimp heads at a sushi bar.

Squid, Elk, Venison, Buffalo/Bison are fairly standard fair around here though.

Maggots and calf fries/mountain oysters. gag!

Huhu grubs. It's a beetle larvae. I've eaten them both raw and cooked.

It's common for people in NZ to have eaten them - the native people of this country used to eat them as a regular part of their diet.
