Several weeks ago I took the plunge and went with Virtual Spinbox. Although I like a lot of the features of the service, lately I have had some issues. Particularly I find that on many occasions, the banner is slow to download or does not download at all. This is highly irritating to me especially when I'm paying $150/month for this service.

I went with Spinbox based on recommendations here and elsewhere. I researched this decision for many weeks and now I feel like I've made a mistake. And I'm not the only one having problems. Right now if I go out to the Sitepoint main page I see four big red x's where the Sitepoint banners should be.

If anyone can offer me any advice or a word of encouragement I would greatly appreciate it right about now.

Came to SitePoint this morning, the first thing I see is

quote/font>
Warning: Failed opening 'http://www.webmasterbase.com/cgi-bin/spin_client.cgi?DC=top&RANDOM=NUMBER' for inclusion in /disk3/sites/sitepoint.com/htdocs/index.php3 on line 36

where the main banner should be. And two red Xs where the button banners should be. What's going on here?

Saw that problem too, Romans837. Seems to be cleared up now, but leaves me with a negative impression of that banner service. If I were you, I'd email Spinbox support and ask them to get their act together. They should at least be professional enough to explain what the problems are.

Same problems tonight. I think that our site is on the same Spinbox server as Matt's is. Whenever I encounter problems (which is pretty frequently lately), I always pop over to Sitepoint and notice that they are having problems too. I would be interested to hear what Matt has to say about the matter as he has been a big proponent of the product in the past.

I'm also a virtual spinbox customer. I am not satisfied with the service. I am pulling out.

    Where are you guys going???

I'm looking for something similar to Spinbox in features but with better performance and reliability. Any ideas?

I would still like to get Matt's take on the Spinbox issue.

Unfortunately, like many of you here, SitePoint has been experiencing problems with Virtual Spinbox lately. Our CTO spoke to Spinbox Support on the phone a little while ago (at 3AM our time, yikes!) and explained them the problems that we've been experiencing.

Nevertheless, problems persist. AdRunner from MyComputer.com looks like a viable alternative to the bigger ad servers like AdForce, RealMedia and Doubleclick DART.

I don't see AdRunner anywhere on MyComputer.com. Can you point me to the exact location?

    Thanks!

Romans837 if you are on the same server as SitePont then that might explain why. I know that they are probably using most of the servers pawer with the taraafic they say they get.

How is Site Point using Virtual Spinbox? I thought that package if for 25,000 impressions or less a day. In an article I saw an employee or founder of Site Point state you recieved 5 million pageviews (or hits I don't recall) a month with is much higher than the 750,000 those accounts allow per month. Not only that but you are pulling more than one ad from spinbox per page.

Just a guess but I'm fairly sure that Sitepoint is either
    a) not on Virtual Spinbox, on the hardware version

    b) Has a customized deal with Spinbox becuase they like the service.

I plunked down the $7,000+ for my own spinbox lite ad server, and I'm paying $1,000+ a extra per month to host it, and the thing still gives me those red boxes sometimes.

However I choose it because I've had other options fail me unrecoverably. CentralAd had gone down, and the developer/owner of the product took days to return my email, I had to threaten legal action just to get him to retrieve my ad logs so I could start the accounts again on spinbox.

It may not be 100% reliable, but at least it has never caused a catostrophy, which is "good enough" for the time being.
