Luke Stevens on Data Driven Design

Luke Stevens is a web designer who believes firmly that testing is the future of web design. I had a chance to chat to him recently about data driven design, A/B testing, and Google Web Optimizer. The interview is live on sitepoint.com:

Matty, I am pretty glad theres other people promoting this kind of thinking, I have always followed the method of testing and trying to better my websites and services with some good old fashoned critical thinking, user interaction and trial and error. It's great that hopefully more people will step outside of the box and spend less time worried about ending up with a completed design which can be left to it's own devices and turning to a usability and UX testing method which promotes gradual evolution, experimentation and innovation

Although I think data should drive usability, isn't design as a whole slightly different, or at least encompasses more than just usability?

Not sure what I think myself :S

Design is different to usability but they go hand in hand, Design is pretty much about what looks good, Usability is about what is easy to use (if you pull it into it's simplest concepts). They are related in the same way accessibility is related to usability, there are overlapping elements but they aren't the same.
