    I voted Toshinden...
Toshinden 1 was ahead of it's time... it was more 3d, more smooth and had better music than anything else at the time. Flawed game play though... once you got below a certain life level you could excute these super moves that made you temporarily invunerable.

I remember all the hype surrounding Mortal Kombat, plus I loved the Finishing moves!!

It got a bit silly when they started turning people into babies.

I loved Streets of Rage too. Me and my cousin used to play it all the time, cos it was pretty much the only 2ply beat 'em up. Apart from a little known game called Cyborg Justice. That was quality.

as good as tekken and street figher are, the daddy of them all is streets of rage.
it quite simply is the most pefect side scrolling beat em up ever.

What about Double Dragon?? And I had a great beat em up on the SNES... scroller but I can't remember the name of it. Had this big dude in it (looked like the Russian one out of SFII) and a few other karate style people. Whats that one called?

Either Street Fighter 2 - logged hundreds of hours on that one. Or Killer Instinct.

I've never liked Tekken, the movement wasn't fluid enough for me.

    I'll second that.

Samurai Shodown is another decent one for the old school list.

That was an awful oversight - I used to love that game - think I may actually ditch Bruce Lee (which was never really any good) and add it.

I've never liked Tekken, the movement wasn't fluid enough for me.
I actually found that to be a bonus. I am a rl martial artist and I always found streetfighter utterly unrealistic, tekken is far more life like - although for realism ufc kicks butt!

I've voted for Streetfighter in the list, though a couple of my personal favourites are perhaps Brutal: Paws of Fury and Turtles Tournament Fighters.

I'm currently hooked on Jedi Power Battles on PSOne, which is sort of a beat 'em up. Yes, I know i'm behind everyone else

StreetFighter II all the way baby. I loved it, it was one of my first experiences, although I still love Streets of Rage and Double Dragon as Cult Classics.

No, I'm with you there. Got it a few months ago and love it. I'm still an avid psx player (although I do have a DC as well). Haven't quite moved to the murky world of ps2 yet...

Not strictly speaking a beat 'em up but GTA3 on the PS2 for its pure "pick some random old granny and beat the hell out of her with a baseball bat" style rampage. Awesome.

And Final Fight is the game I was thinking of on the SNES. That rocked too. My vote it still with StreetFighter 2 (Super Ultra Hyper Fighting Special Edition 4 Version 1 Turbo Mode) as a complete classic.

Yeah! Streets of Rage was a classic. I liked SORII the best, Skate was such fun to play. And can we forget Golden Axe?

Super Street Fighter II Turbo Edition on the Mega Drive with two of those big arcade sticks, 15 friends, and a big board with a tournament structure drawn out on it. And a big, big crate of beer.

    Heaven.
