Girls trapped in Storm Drain use Facebook to Call for Help

    I thought this was interesting.

Firefighters eventually rescued the pair after being contacted by one of their male school friends.

I guess there's no limit if you really want to grab your friend's attention... although calling emergency services could have been faster but not that fun... they would have known about your little adventure after and not when it happened

Stupid... should have called the emergency services right away.

Also, nothing the daily mail publishes is reliable or cogent.

Does Facebook have an appropriate status for that? Married. Single. Stuck down drain.

I don't know if I'd call them stupid.

The girls were 10 and 12. When I was about that age (or younger I guess), my mom made me learn all of the emergency numbers, etc. All of that was together with the talk about, "And if a stranger calls when I'm not home, tell them I'm in the shower."

Maybe they didn't learn any of that, and instead did what was most natural to them. Why alert one person for help when you could instantly alert ALL 200+ of your friends ?... Maybe that was their reasoning.

Whatever works, I suppose...though being in a storm drain, time may be very critical.

Because that one person that they are notifying is a trained professional who could get them out of this drain pipe and who is guaranteed to answer their call vs alerting a bunch of pre-teens who may or may not be paying attention and who may or may not take the status message seriously.

My guess is they didn't alert the proper authorities because they didn't want to get in trouble with mommy and daddy because they were playing in a drain pipe.

I guess they watch too many US/Hollywood movies and dialed 911 instead many times, but always got an error message.

I'm not saying it was a good idea.

I'm saying that may have been their logic.

I think this raises important questions though. You might see more incidents like this and how would you know what is real. If there are a few more of this then the media would begin interviewing their experts.

I wouldn't be so quick to call anybody stupid.

They are still young and we couldn't blame them by not calling the rescue first. Maybe facebook was the first thing that came to their minds.

Can't say they did the right thing but they were lucky that someone actually caught their attention and phoned for the rescuers. Kids these days....

The incident also highlights the tendency to consider posting on twitter or a forum to be the equivalent of real research when solving problems.

Well, real people use Facebook and Twitter. Why shouldn't that be considered 'real' research ?

If I was marketing a product and needed to survey customer opinions, Facebook seems like a real enough place to start !

You know, a local news show here reported internet rumours about Jeff Goldblum's death as real, complete with entertainment reporter very gravely shaking his head and talking about what a terrible loss it was. Epic faaaaail.

    'Real' research needs evidence.

Sure, but someone being dead or alive isn't generally a matter of opinion

So therefore I'm taking this stories with a pinch of salt.

If it helps improve the credibility somewhat, this was also reported by the ABC. There's also an interesting piece asking why they might have chosen Facebook instead of 000.
